Wolff M. Kirsch, LA 51, MD 55, is active in neurological ­research at Loma Linda University Medical School. He received the Sun Lee Prize in Experimental Microsurgery.

Eric E. Ungar, EN 51, was awarded the Gold Medal of the Acoustical Society of America in June for “contributions over six decades to acoustics, vibration isolation and noise control.” Since 1996, he has been chief engineering scientist at Acentech, Inc., a Cambridge consulting firm specializing in acoustics and structural dynamics. He and his wife of 60 years, Goldie (Becker) Ungar, BU 50, reside in Newton, Mass. The couple has four daughters and 10 grandchildren.

Wayne F. Schlosser, FA 58, received the coveted Rotary International Significant Achievement Award for directing his Rotary Club of Swansea’s record-breaking Free Infant Immunization Program. The Rotary Grant Program sponsored 553 immunizations to 196 children and helped 163 families, which accounted for a 60 percent increase compared to the previous year. This was his eighth successful Rotary Grant Program created for the health of infants and children.

Donald H. Stewart Jr., MD 61, and his wife, Anne, live in a retirement home. The couple has four children and 10 grandchildren. Donald has been afflicted with inclusion body myositis since 1987 but is still able to do some oil painting.

Gordon Black, LA 64, posted online a market research analysis of the publishing industry as it faces the eReader revolution. The eReader Revolution: A Replacement Technology describes the changes that are coming to publishing. It is available on Amazon in their Kindle eBooks section.

Robert G. Roosen, EN 64, founded Rainbow Observatory in 1980 in Kalapana, Hawaii. It is a privately funded and operated social systems observatory. Its primary focus is on how innovations interfere with fundamentals in preparation for reversion to fundamentals expected on Change Day (Dec. 21, 2012).

Marilyn (Pajot) Robinson, GR 66, co-authored Making a Way: Ulysses Byas (CreateSpace, 2011). The book, a memoir of the first African-American school superintendent in the southeast, details the efforts of Ulysses Byas to overcome the years of neglect and segregation in Macon County, Ala. Robinson, a trained historian and career educator, worked closely with Byas at the state teachers association and later in Tuskegee. Robinson resides in Atlanta with her husband, Paul.

Perci Chester, FA 67, installed Steelie Sphere (steel/automotive paint) in Grandview Square Park in Edina, Minn. The work was commissioned for a yearlong exhibition with the possibility of purchase. Chester’s 2009 Gyr Family Cycle (a 3-part textured stainless steel installation) won People’s Choice and is installed in Centennial Lakes Park Promenade in Edina, Minn. William Siedhoff, UC 68, SW 73, was honored as the 2011 Man of the Year by the St. Louis Crisis Nursery, where he chairs the advisory board. He also received the 2011 McGough Award from the National Convocation of Jail & Prison Ministry. Siedhoff is the director of the City of St. Louis Department of Human Services.

Adjoa A. Aiyetoro, SW 69, is a law professor and social activist. She is the founding director of the Institute on Race and Ethnicity, established by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Michael F. Finkel, LA 69, MD 73, was recognized as the 2011 Kenneth M. Viste Jr., MD, Patient Advocate of the Year by the American Academy of Neurology.

Susan (Lecin) Polinsky, LA 72, is the president of TechTriad, Inc., the oldest continually woman-owned technology company in the Triad area of North Carolina. Polinsky founded the company in 1998. TechTriad develops online presences, promotes Internet strategy and architects, and installs and maintains computer networks. Polinsky and her husband, David, have been married 39 years. David is an attorney. The couple has two children: Danny and Lauren.

Todd Meier, LA 73, and his wife, Nelly Garcia, have two children. Their daughter recently graduated cum laude from Wake Forest and is currently working toward a master’s degree. Their son graduated cum laude from Duke and then worked for Teach For America for two years in Las Vegas. Married May 7, 2011, he is in his third year in law school at SMU. Meier began a private equity fund in 1998, and his law firm is currently expanding into Austin, Texas, and Nashville, Tenn. He was elected mayor of his hometown of Addison, Texas, on May 14, 2011.

Janet Strange Rubel, LA 73, and her husband have been married for 35 years. They have a granddaughter named Sabrina. Janet is the author of a humorous account of forming her own law practice in a new book published by the American Bar Association. She is also the author of consumer law reference books.

Gil Ontai, GA 74, is commissioner of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission. The commission will draw the district lines to create districts of relatively equal population that will provide fair representation for all Californians. Rich Gierman, LA 75, is a network engineer for Monterey County in California. In April, he earned his Cisco Certified Network Professional certification. He has been a square dance caller for more than 25 years and has traveled all over the country. Last year, Gierman achieved his Distinguished Toastmaster award from Toastmasters International. He also runs a karaoke show.

Robert S. Baumol, LA 76, LW 80, has been tutoring in political science, history and English at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teanack, N.J., for three years. He was recently hired as an adjunct professor in the history and political science department.

Sharad Sheth, GA 76, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sculpture from the Gujarat State Government in 2009. He received the Project Award for Excellence in Architecture from the Indian Institute of Architects Mumbai in 1991.

Bill FitzGibbons, GF 78, was named the 2011–12 Texas State Three-Dimensional Artist. He was appointed by the Texas State Legislature for the exceptional quality of his work and for his outstanding commitment to the arts in Texas.

Janice Levy, LA 78, is on sabbatical leave from the Department of Cinema, Photography and Media Arts at Ithaca College. She is consulting and teaching at Princess Nora Bint Abdul Rahman University (PNU) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Since her arrival in Saudi Arabia in October 2010, Levy has taught the first-ever photographic courses at PNU and helped develop the photography major in PNU’s College of Art and Design.

David Marks, LA 78, was honored in March when his company’s work for the Country Club Plaza was included in the 2011 Rebrand 100 Global Awards. Marks is co-founder and president of The Collaboration, a 10-year-old integrated marketing and creative group headquartered in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District.

Jerry R. Phillips, GR 78, retired from public high school teaching (math and English) and community college instruction (English) last fall to devote his time to his priesthood duties. The Episcopal Church of the Nativity is an antebellum church in rural Rosedale, La.

Anne Pollen Lurie, LA 79, has two children in college. Her son, Aron, is at WUSTL’s School of Engineering & Applied Science, Class of ’13. Her daughter is at Smith College, Class of ’12.

Andrew R. Sadock, BU 80, wrote three books about holistic philosophy/medicine/psychology/energetics. He is pursuing his PhD. Sadock owns a wooden tall ship (gaff-rigged schooner) in Chicago to promote green globalization, support local tourism, and help keep the nearly lost artform of wooden tall ships alive and accessible. Steven Leon, LA 81, was named executive director of Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, Mass. He spent the past six years at Harvard, where he was assistant general manager of the American Repertory Theatre. Beth Lewis, GA 82, is an associate professor of architecture at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. She is a registered architect, a LEED AP and is in her third term as president of the AIA Tallahassee Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Lewis is a past member of the AIA Florida Board of Directors and a founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council Capital Region Chapter. She teaches architectural design, sustainable construction and green-building courses and was the 2011 Teacher of the Year. She has four children.

Liselotte (Fehr) Schwarz, UC 82, and Hanspeter Schwarz, GM 82, moved back to their native Switzerland. Hanspeter retired as a professor of pediatrics at the University of Munich, Germany, and Liselotte is a homemaker.

James T. Whittaker, EN 82, is a software developer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, R.I. His son, Tom, is a freshman at Brandeis University; his son, John, is a junior at Yale University and is currently studying in Japan for a year. Whittaker and his wife, Noriko, have been married for 23 years.

Brian Zachariah, LA 82, relocated from Texas to Chicago, where he was recently named the chief medical coordinator for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. As such, he serves as the enforcement officer of the Illinois Medical Practice Act.

Joel T. Fishbain, LA 83, retired from the U.S. Army and moved to Michigan. He is a physician at St. John Hospital and Medical Center.

Stephen Sywak, EN 83, is senior mechanical engineer in the entertainment division at McLaren Engineering Group in West Nyack, N.Y. Sywak was lead mechanical engineer for Cirque du Soleil’s KA at the MGM Grand Casino/Hotel in Las Vegas. KA won the prestigious THEA Award for Outstanding Technical Achievement in 2008. Sywak also served as lead mechanical engineer for the development of the twin Animatronic Dancing Cranes in Singapore. The crane show is currently under consideration by the Guinness Book of World Records as possibly the world’s largest performing robots. Sywak’s daughter, Ellie, is a senior at Brown University.

Jackie (Young) Laberer, LA 84, is the controller and accountant for St. Louis–based hip-hop artist, entertainer and actor Cornell Haynes Jr. (Nelly).

Charles D. Hawker, GB 85, was awarded a Diploma of Honor by the Association of Clinical Scientists (ACS) for his contributions and dedicated service to the organization and the field of clinical science. Hawker is the scientific director of ARUP Laboratories and past president of ACS.

David R. Hunter, LA 85, was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in a convocation ceremony held in Honolulu, Hawaii, in May, during the organization’s annual convention. Archbishop Desmond Tutu was the keynote speaker. Hunter is a senior psychiatrist practicing forensic psychiatry at Fulton State Hospital.

Eric R. Johnson, LA 86, ­relocated to Sydney, Australia. He is a technical support manager at Blackboard, Inc.

Naomi (Arffa) Swiezy, LA 86, was named the Alan H. Cohen Family Scholar of Psychiatry at the Indiana University School of Medicine. She is also an associate professor of clinical psychology. Swiezy functions as the program director of the Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center at Riley Hospital for Children. In 2004, she developed the HANDS in Autism (Helping Answer Needs by Developing Specialists in Autism) training model and currently serves as program director.

Sylvia Mayer, LA 87, was named by Texas Diversity magazine as one of the “Most Powerful and Influential Women in Texas.” She is a business finance and restructuring partner in the Houston office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.

Matthew H. Jones, LA 88, recently relocated to New Orleans. He is a science teacher at Isidore Newman School.

Christine Wietlisbach, LA 88, OT 89, was elected to chair the California Board of Behavioral Sciences in May 2011. The California State Senate appointed her to the board as a public member in January 2010. She is a practicing occupational therapist at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., and a faculty member at Loma Linda University. She is past-president of the Occupational Therapy Association of California and recently completed two terms as a governor-appointee to the California Board of Occupational Therapy. David Braswell, UC 90, UC 92, was elected to serve a three-year term on the executive committee of Armstrong Teasdale. He leads the corporate services practice group at the firm, which was recently named one of the three top corporate law firms in St. Louis by Corporate Board Member magazine. Braswell is also chair of the firm’s securities practice area. He concentrates his practice in the areas of securities, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and finance.

Joshua Coben, LA 90, won the X.J. Kennedy Poetry Prize for his book, Maker of Shadows (Texas Review Press, 2010). He teaches elementary school in the Boston area, where he resides with his wife, Djuna Perkins, and their three children.

Doug Isenberg, LA 90, was appointed a domain name panelist by the National Arbitration Forum and the British Columbia International Commercial Arbitration Centre. Benjamin Chia, LA 01, graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in May 2011. He is doing an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Douglas Harrison, GR 01, GR 05, was promoted to associate professor of English at Florida Gulf Coast University. His research was recognized with a 2010 FGCU Faculty Scholarship Excellence Award, and he is currently FGCU Faculty Senate president. Harrison’s book, Then Sings My Soul: The Culture of Southern Gospel Music, is forthcoming with the University of Illinois Press.

Michael Johnson, BU 01, and his wife, Brenna, announce the birth of Gisele Katherine on June 8, 2011. The family resides in Tustin, Calif.

Dana M. Mehrer, LW 01, recently joined Silpada Designs, LLC in Lexena, Kan., as the firm’s general counsel.

Kendra Barkoff, LA 02, is the press secretary for Vice President Joe Biden. She previously worked in the Interior Department, where she served as deputy communications director and press secretary for Secretary Ken Salazar.

Ani Vallabhaneni, BU 02, EN 02, is one of a 10-member student team that launched Sanergy, a company that builds cement enclosures to house toilets. The company’s plan is to provide adequate, cost-effective sanitation to developing countries, beginning with Kenya. Sanergy won the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s 100K Competition in May 2011. Vallabhaneni received an MBA from MIT.

Stephanie L. Blanch, LA 03, received a master’s of science in urban education in May 2010. She is an assistant principal intern for the New York City Department of Education and is pursuing her second master’s for administration in building and district leadership.

Sharon Foreman Kready, SW 03, joined the faculty of Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Va., as an assistant professor of sociology. She received a PhD in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University in May 2011. Her dissertation was titled “Organizational Culture and Partnership Process: A Grounded Theory Study of Community-Campus Partnerships.” She resides in Bedford County, Va., with her husband, Todd, their dog, Ellie, and their cats, Bonnie and Clyde. Todd is a forester with the Virginia Department of Forestry.

Adnan A. Nisar, LA 03, received an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Nisar recently accepted a job in Abu Dhabi at the Mubadala Development Company.

Jarriot L. Rook, LA 03, LW 10, GL 10, is an associate at Husch Blackwell in St. Louis. He concentrates his work in the area of trusts & estates law.

Hannah (Grossman) Singerman, LA 03, and her ­husband, Daniel, announce the birth of Sivan Rosalie on March 7, 2011. The family resides in Cleveland. Sivan is the niece of Bill Singerman, LA 98; the granddaughter of Ellen (Unger) Singerman, LA 74; and the great-granddaughter of Marvin Grossman, BU 49.

Jennifer (Grusby) Steiman, LA 03, and Josh Steiman, LA 00, announce the birth of Marissa on Jan. 19, 2011. The family resides in Springfield, Ill., where Jennifer is completing her general surgery residency program at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Maria T. Arce-Larreta, LA 04, and Carlos J. Aguirre, EN 03, were married on May 28, 2011. The couple is relocating to Charleston, S.C., where Maria will complete her medical ­residency and Carlos will continue to work as a software engineer.

Allen E. Daniel, GR 04, is urban outreach project specialist at the National Alliance on Mental Illness. He is a project manager for the St. Louis Community College on their Broadband Technology Initiative Program.

Alice Kim-Morris, LW 04, and Cody Morris, LW 05, moved from Chicago to Atlanta. Cody recently graduated from UIC Medical School with honors and matched into the residency program for radiology at Emory.

David Perlman, BU 04, is one of the co-captains for the Washington University New York Chapter softball team. Perlman recently surprised his girlfriend, Tamara Eaton, with a visit to the home of Nelson Mandela during the World Cup Finals. During the stay, the conversation with Mandela focused on David’s grandfather, a leader of the anti-apartheid movement and a former mayor of Johannesburg. David and Tamara were also able to spend time with Mandela’s third wife, Graca Machel, the only woman to be the first lady for two different countries, and Jeff Radebe, the minister of justice. Teghpal Singh, LA 04, completed his PhD in neuroscience at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has co-authored nine publications, three of which he was the first author. Singh is doing a postdoctoral fellowship at Brown using cutting-edge optogenetic techniques to understand specific circuits in the brain.

Bonnie Roy, GA 06, is ­principal at SWT Design, Inc., in St. Louis. She focuses on a ­collaboration of architecture, landscape architecture and infrastructure in the metropolitan landscape.

Jessica Schaffner, LA 06, SW 07, and Craig Wilen, LA 06, were married on June 18, 2011, in Philadelphia. Craig is a sixth-year MD/PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania, and Jessica is a third-year PhD student in social work at Bryn Mawr College.

Melissa Clyde, SW 07, was selected to participate in the 2011 OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme, which took place this summer in Geneva, Switzerland. She represented the Navajo Nation, the United States and North America. She is the senior program director at the National Indian Child Welfare Association.

Damara R. Hamlin, LA 07, was certified by the American Board of Genetic Counselors and is a genetic counselor at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Hamlin services active duty military and their dependents in the areas of prenatal, pediatric, cancer and adult genetics. She has been instrumental in the expansion of the genetics programs for the U.S. Department of Defense in the Southwest region of the United States.

Rebecca S. Hefel, LA 07, and Jared W. Stein, EN 07, were married on June 25, 2011, at Graham Chapel. Rebecca is a fourth-year medical student planning to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. Jared is a software quality supervisor for Pearson. The couple resides in Iowa City with their miniature dachshund, Cloe.

Katie Campos, LA 08, was appointed to serve as assistant secretary for education for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. She is the co-founder and executive director of Buffalo ReformED, a not-for-profit education reform advocacy organization that empowers the community to prioritize education by putting students first.

Jamie M. Resnick, LA 08, is completing her third year of veterinary school.

Katie Kilberg, LA 09, and Adam D’Agostine, LA 09, were married in Atlanta on May 28, 2011. The couple resides in Boston, where Katie is attending Suffolk Law and Adam works at Brewster Home Fashions and attends Boston College Graduate Business School. Melissa G. Krain, LA 09, is attending law school at the University of Pennsylvania.

Josh Petersel, BU 09, and Jonathan Fritz, LA 09, founded Eleven magazine while students at WUSTL. They wrote their business plan in the “Hatchery” class, taught by Cliff Holekamp, senior lecturer in entrepreneurship at Olin Business School. After growing the business for two years, Petersel and Fritz sold it. Petersel is now attending Harvard, and Fritz is attending Stanford.

Cole A. Randle, LA 09, was appointed associate director of the White House Travel Office in February 2011.

Evan A. Scott, SI 09, lives and works in Lausanne, Switzerland. He is a postdoctoral researcher at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne. His work focuses on the development of nanoparticle-based vaccines for cancer and HIV immunotherapy.

Julia N. Allen, SW 10, was selected to be a partner in the 2010–11 American Society on Aging New Ventures in Leadership Program. The program’s core goal is to help partners enhance their abilities to improve quality of life, health, safety and economic security for older adults, provided in culturally appropriate ways. Allen is the associate director at C.R.E.A.T.E., Inc., a small nonprofit that provides social services and transportation to residents 55 and older in affordable housing units.

Chantavia Burton, LW 10, received a master’s degree in management from Wake Forest Business School.

Michael J. Carter, LA 10, is the founder and CEO of Strive for College. The organization was awarded the Echoing Green Fellowship. Echoing Green identifies, invests in and supports some of the world’s best emerging social entrepreneurs. Strive for College aims to improve the college admissions process by ensuring that quality information and sufficient motivation are accessible for all.

Marina M. Cheung, LA 10, is pursuing a doctor of physical therapy degree at Washington University. She anticipates graduating in 2013.

Vidhya Nagarajan, FA 10, illustrated a coloring book for the No Unwanted Litters campaign launched by St. Louis PetLovers Coalition in partnership with Nestlé Purina Pet Care.

Robert L. Nickles, SW 10, was recently licensed as a master’s-level social worker in Missouri. He is working toward licensure as a clinical social worker. Nickles works with groups, individuals, couples and families at two different agencies in the St. Louis area.

Joshua S. Reece, GM 10, serves as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Eleanor M. Ryburn, FA 10, is an assistant sculpture teacher, residential community leader and student adviser at the Oxbow school. Oxbow is a residential, semester-long program for high school students with a strong concentration in the visual arts.

Janet R. Stone, SI 10, relocated from St. Louis to San Antonio, Texas, to pursue a project management position in the city’s growing bioinformatics community.
