On Nov. 4, 2011, the Alumni Board of Governors gathered for its first meeting of the academic year at College Hall on the South 40. The board informs, coordinates, energizes and encourages graduates to serve the needs of the university, students and other alumni. They represent alumni on the Washington University Board of Trustees and work closely with volunteers and staff.
One of the Alumni Board of Governors’ goals this year is to help prepare students for their lives after graduation. “In today’s economy, it is difficult for students to get that first job,” says Deborah Grossman, EMBA ’91, chair of the Alumni Board of Governors. “Our network of 120,000 alumni represents all ages, fields and career stages — from those who are starting their own businesses, working for corporations or nonprofit organizations, to those who are retired. Our connections and experiences put us in a position to help students transition from the academic world into careers of their choosing.” The board identifies alumni who can create internships and career shadowing experiences for students as well as permanent positions.
In addition, the board fosters engagement at all levels. Many opportunities to connect with alumni exist, especially in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and St. Louis. Alumni can get involved as volunteers by interviewing prospective students, serving on Reunion committees, and planning regional events.
