Jeremy Rifkin, Third Industrial RevolutionListen to the Assembly Series lecture by Jeremy Rifkin, an international economic forecaster and social observer, who spoke on the Danforth Campus Oct. 11. Rifkin is the visionary president of the Foundation on Economic Trends, a consultant to the European Union. He is author of 19 books (most recently of The Third Industrial Revolution: How Lateral Power Is Transforming Energy, the Economy, and the World) that have explored the impact of scientific and technological changes on the economy, the workforce, society and the environment. His books have been translated into more than 30 languages.

“The second industrial revolution is dying. We can talk about energy independence, fossil fuels and shale gas, the internal combustion engine and centralized electricity, but it’s over. It’s not coming back. Building up the old infrastructure is about the biggest waste of money I’ve ever heard of. We are now on the cusp of a third industrial revolution,” Rifkin says.

Many governments are in the process of enacting Rifkin’s new economic sustainability plan based on his latest book. Furthermore, 100 of the world’s leading renewable energy-related companies have joined Rifkin’s Third Industrial Revolution Global CEO Business Roundtable.
